Las Vegas is the most populous city of Nevada in America. It is an internationally renowned major attraction for gambling, gaming, shopping and entertainment. And it is one of the most expensive cities in the world too. Glamorous, as it is now, the history of Las Vegas is totally the opposite to its present face. Las Vegas was a name given by the Spanish travelers, who crossed the arid areas of Texas and went through this city. Vegas at that time has natural wells, which were used by the travelers to collect water on their way, and hence the name Las Vegas ('meadows') was given to this valley as we know it today. Initially, Las Vegas was established as a crossover town and a minor railway junction for travelers in 1905. The major influx of population to Las Vegas, a desert area can be accredited to the huge available land here and the construction of Hoover dam in 1936. The Hoover dam employed a number of workers and they settled in small colonies at Vegas at that time. Gambling was a popular past time for these construction workers, who at that time were living under enormous economical, physical and mental conditions. In 1931, gambling was made legal here, by the opening of Bugsy Siegel's Flamingo Hotel. This was the beginning of a new era for this slumberous and sleepy desert town. High stales and gambling attracted the rich and the famous, and the opening of THE MIRAGE, kicked off an era of super luxury casinos here. All through its inception, from the railroad construction to the construction of Hoover damn and later the legalization of gambling, Las Vegas has been labeled as a true and intrinsic tourist spot. After super luxury casinos and resorts came into being, the economy of Las Vegas has grown by leaps and bounds. The city owes all its gambling reputation to the American mafia of that time, most famous being Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky. Later on during the mid century, an American air force base, named Nellis Air force Base brought in cash rich military personnel, further booming the casino business. Because of a boom in the casino industry, job hunters started hitting this town. All this led to a boom in the realty prices here, the effect of which is still prevalent today. These factors, combined with the unique attitude and culture of its people has made Las Vegas a major tourist hot spot and a cash rich desert rose, as we know it today. |
